John Deere has built skid-steer loaders since 1970, when the JD14 and JD24 appeared – the tractor group's entry into the class Bobcat had invented. The register shows five generations: JD14, JD24 and JD24A of the 1970s, 60 and 90 of the 1980s, the four-digit 3375 to 8875 of the 1990s, which Deere had New Holland build, the 125 and 240 to 280 with Series II from its own Knoxville, Tennessee plant from 1998, the 300 series 313 to 332 from 2005 and the G series 312GR to 332G from 2017, built today in Dubuque. The numbers rise with size and rated operating capacity; in the G series R marks radial and G vertical lift geometry, and the 'Skid Steer JD' suffixes in the register come from dealer listings.

The register lists 37 versions with 12.7 to 63.4 kW from two- to five-cylinders of 685 to 4,523 cm³ – Yanmar engines in the small, Deere 3029 and 4045 in the larger models – at rated speeds of 2,100 to 3,600 rpm, service weights from 1,208 to 7,150 kg and heights from 1,700 to 2,190 mm.
Deere's skid steers share attachments and quick couplers with the market standard and are sold mainly through the farm-equipment dealer network to farmers, horse operations and municipalities – the 4045 engine of the big models is the same as in the 5-series tractors.
On used machines, operating hours, play in lift arm and quick coupler, the condition of drive hydraulics and chain cases, tyres and, on the New Holland-built 4475 to 8875, parts availability through both brands are what count.
