John Deere 3010 and 510 – the 10-series from the New Generation of Power since 1960: three to four cylinders, 29.4 to 47.8 kW
In 1960 John Deere introduced the New Generation of Power, a completely new generation of tractors with modern multi-cylinder engines, built at the Waterloo and Moline plants in the United States; the 3010 is among the first models of this New Generation range. The 10-series here gathers smaller and medium models carrying the type numbering ending in 10 typical of the era. On the North American market of the 1960s this established a power spectrum ranging from entry-level to large tractors and laid the basis for Deere's long-term success in the tractor market.

The register lists 2 versions of 29.4 to 47.8 kW (40 to 65 hp) from three to four cylinders of 2,490 to 4,164 cm³ at 2,400 to 2,500 rpm, unladen weights from 2,074 to 3,160 kg, lengths from 3,400 to 3,750 mm, widths from 1,580 to 2,125 mm and heights from 1,950 to 2,245 mm.
With the New Generation of Power, John Deere ended the era of the two-cylinder tractors nicknamed Johnny Poppers and repositioned itself against International Harvester, Case and Allis-Chalmers; the mid power class of this 10-series was widespread on North American arable farms.
On a used example, what counts is operating hours, the condition of clutch and gearbox, tightness of engine and hydraulics, and rust on the bodywork; for these early New Generation models, parts supply is well organised through the North American vintage market and specialist John Deere restorers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
