J. I. Case of Racine, Wisconsin, ranks among the oldest farm-equipment makers in the United States and, in 1969, launched one of the market's first successful articulated four-wheel-drive tractors with the 1200 Traction King. The heavy Traction King range of the 1970s – the 2470, 2670 and 2870 – carried the concept forward, while the 1470 stood alongside it as a large conventional two-axle tractor without four-wheel drive. The number in the type designation on Case's big tractors of the period roughly followed the horsepower class, so that the 2470, 2670 and 2870 mark the range's strongest four-wheel-drive models in ascending order. All models were powered by Case's own six-cylinder diesel engines, sized differently from model to model.

In the 1970s the Traction King tractors answered the needs of the large grain and cotton farms of the prairies, where a single tractor had to pull implements over 10 metres wide; they competed directly with the big Steiger and Versatile four-wheel-drive tractors of the same region.
On used articulated tractors, play in the articulation joint and the four-wheel-drive hubs, the condition of clutch and gearbox, frame cracks at the mounting points and rust in the sheet metal count; parts supply for engine and drivetrain now runs through Case IH.
