The JCB 538-70 Agri is a telehandler from the British manufacturer JCB. The Agri suffix marks the version for farming, for example for silage bales, feed and manure. Trade press gives the 538-70 a capacity of 3,800 kg at a lift height of slightly over seven metres; it is positioned as a mid-range model between the 532-70 and the 542-70.

A telehandler (called Loadall by JCB) lifts loads on a telescoping boom and sets them down at heights and reaches a forklift cannot manage. It drives on tyres across field, yard and building site and is fitted with forks, bucket or grab. Key figures are capacity, lift height and reach; the further the boom extends, the lower the permissible load becomes.

In practice the machine's load chart is decisive: it assigns a permissible load to each boom position. A quick coupler at the boom tip lets forks, bucket, bale clamp or work platform be changed in a short time, so one machine takes over several jobs on the farm or site.

JCB telehandlers – other models: from the 5204 to the 560-80 Industry from Rocester, Agri, Industry and Con versions plus the TM compact-loader range

This page gathers the JCB telehandlers the register could not assign to a named range: from compact farmyard models such as the 5204 to heavy-duty models such as the 560-80 Industry. JCB builds its telehandlers – the brand decisively shaped this vehicle category with the first Loadall in 1977 – at its home plant in Rocester in the English county of Staffordshire. The suffixes in the type designation sort the models by field of use: Agri marks the agricultural version, Industry or Ind the industrial version, Con the construction version; TM is a separate range of compact wheeled and articulated loaders with a telescopic boom.

The register lists here 32 versions, from simple farmyard loaders to high-output telehandlers for agriculture, industry and construction, as reflected in the model designations from 514 to 560 and the TM range from TM110 to TM420.

Telehandlers of this type are the most versatile lifting vehicles on farms, yards and building sites: a single machine replaces a yard loader, forklift and, in part, a crane, because the telescopic boom reaches both upward and forward; JCB ranks among the world's leading makers here alongside Manitou and Merlo.

On used examples, the condition of the telescopic boom and its slide pads, the tightness of the hydraulic cylinders, tyre and brake wear, the function of the attachment lock, and rust on the frame all matter; spare parts and servicing run through the JCB dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
