International Harvester Farmall – from the 1924 'Regular' to the hundreds series: the row-crop tractor and its types
With the Farmall 'Regular' of 1924, International Harvester introduced the row-crop tractor: high ground clearance, closely spaced front wheels and the ability to carry implements between the axles made the tractor for the first time a universal machine for root crops and maize. The name Farmall – to 'farm all' – became North America's best-known tractor brand and was later continued by Case IH.

The type logic changed over the decades: the early F-12, F-14 and F-20 of the 1930s carried letter-number codes, the post-war models letters (A, B, C, H, M), and from 1958 came the hundreds series – 140, 240, 340, 460, 560 – with a rising number for rising output; the '06' models such as the 656, 706, 756 and the big 1206 of the 1960s formed the last classic Farmall generation. In the register the models run from 10.2 to 83.8 kW, from 1,088 to 5,913 cm³ with two to six cylinders and from 900 to 4,588 kg unladen; top speed lies between 6 and 30 km/h.
Production periods in the register begin in 1924 and end in the early 1970s, when International Harvester retired the Farmall name in favour of IH designations.
Historic Farmalls are the collector tractors par excellence in the USA, with excellent parts supply. In Europe they are rarer; when buying, originality, engine condition and – on the early models – the function of the PTO and the mechanical lift gear are what count.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
