The bore measures 98.4 mm. The stroke is 111.1 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,500 rpm. Construction: standard tractor, unit construction. Around 4.031 units were built. The C-Familie series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 85 to 100 hp; the 955 sits in the lower part of that range with 90 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 946 below it with 85 hp and the 1055 above it with 100 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 3,600 to 4,370 kg; here the 955 sits in the upper part of that range with 4,090 kg. 391 International Harvester models across 45 series are on record.

International Harvester 946 to 1055XL (1970s) – the six-cylinders from Doncaster: XL for the comfort cab, throughout a 5.1 to 5.9-litre diesel, 62 to 74 kW, 318 to 381 Nm

International Harvester built its own range of larger six-cylinder field tractors for the European market at its British Doncaster plant, to which the 946, 955 and 1055 models belong. The number in the type designation orders the power class in ascending order, the XL suffix marks the more comfortable cab specification against the base version – the 955XL and 1055XL offered a roomier, better-insulated cab compared with the 946 and 955, with largely the same engines underneath.

The register lists 5 versions uniformly with six cylinders, engines of 5,073 to 5,867 cm³, outputs of 62.2 to 74 kW and a rated speed around 2,200 rpm. On four models torque falls between 318.8 and 381 Nm; service weights range from 3,600 to 4,370 kg, lengths from 3,912 to 4,194 mm.

The Doncaster six-cylinders occupied the upper mid segment of European field tractors in the 1970s, competing with Ford, Massey Ferguson and the then-strengthening Fendt range; IH tractors were technically regarded as solid, if less widespread than the established European brands. After the sale of IH's agricultural division to Case in the early 1980s, the Doncaster models were carried over into Case IH ranges.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of clutch and multi-stage gearbox, hydraulic pump and linkage, the tightness of the cab glazing on XL models, and rust on frame and wings count; parts supply runs through Case IH as legal successor.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
