International Harvester 74 series (1970–1977) – the World Wide tractors from Doncaster: 354 to 674, the final digits 74 as series, the first digits as size class
The 74 series was International Harvester's mid-range for the world outside North America: presented in 1970 and built at the British Doncaster plant, which had made the small IH tractors since 1949, with sister plants in France (Saint-Dizier) and Germany (Neuss) contributing transmissions and engines. The type logic: the final digits 74 mark the series, the first digits order the size in ascending order – 354 and 374 the small models succeeding the B-275 and B-414, 444 and 474 the mid-range, 574 and 674 the big ones at about 67 and 72 hp; the 475 is the development of the 474. The engines are IH four-cylinders from Neuss and Doncaster, as diesels and – for the British and export markets – as petrol engines, of 2.3 to 3.9 litres at 1,600 to 2,400 rpm.

The register lists 8 versions with 25.7 to 48.5 kW from four-cylinders of 2,346 to 3,914 cm³, torque from 132 to 207 Nm, unladen weights from 1,697 to 2,565 kg, lengths from 2,997 to 3,570 mm, widths from 1,621 to 1,753 mm and heights from 1,448 to 2,235 mm.
The 74s were the best-selling IH tractors of their time in Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and the Commonwealth countries; in 1977 the 84 series followed in the same logic, with which Doncaster continued into the Case IH era.
On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch (dual clutch for the independent PTO), gearbox and hydraulics, sheet metal and cab count; parts run through Case IH and British IH specialists.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
