The International Harvester FARMALL 400 is a model in the 100er series. Production: 1954–1956. The engine delivers 45.6 hp (33.5 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,324 cm³. Torque is 553 Nm. Rated speed is 1,450 rpm. The machine is 3,585 mm long, 2,134 mm wide and 2,007 mm high. The unladen weight is 2,699 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,432 mm. Ground clearance is 572 mm. Top speed is 27 km/h. Transmission: 5 V/1 R or 10 V/2 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 6.00 x 16, rear 13 x 38. The fuel is Benzin/LPG. The bore measures 101.6 mm. The stroke is 133.35 mm. The compression ratio is 6.3:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,075 rpm. Construction: frame construction. Around 31.806 units were built. The 100 er-Baureihe series covers 9 models. Rated output within it ranges from 18.8 to 63 hp; the FARMALL 400 sits in the upper part of that range with 45.6 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the FARMALL 400 Diesel below it with 44.5 hp and the W-400 above it with 48 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,180 to 3,078 kg; here the FARMALL 400 sits in the upper part of that range with 2,699 kg. 391 International Harvester models across 45 series are on record.

International Harvester 100 series (1954–1956) – the successors to the Farmall letters: Farmall 100 to 400 and W-400, the number as size class, the Torque Amplifier of 1954, petrol, LPG and the first diesels, 14 to 46 kW

The 100 series replaced in 1954 the Farmall letter tractors with which International Harvester had led the American market since the 1930s: the Farmall 100 followed the Super A, the 200 the Super C, the 300 the Super H and the 400 the Super M – each with more power, a new bonnet and the hydraulics IH called Hydra-Touch. The type logic: the hundreds number orders the size class in ascending order, Farmall marks the row-crop version with closely spaced front wheels, W the standard version with wide front axle (W-400), International the industrial and utility versions (100, 300, 600). The technical innovation of the range was the Torque Amplifier of 1954, a powershift step that raised pulling power under load by about 45 percent – the forerunner of all powershift transmissions. The fuels reflect the time: petrol and LPG dominate, and the Farmall 400 Diesel was one of the first diesel row-crop tractors.

The register lists 9 versions with 13.8 to 46.3 kW, 2,011 to 5,734 cm³ with four cylinders, rated speeds of 1,400 to 1,750 rpm, torque from 199 to 553 Nm, unladen weights from 1,180 to 3,078 kg, lengths from 2,715 to 3,585 mm, widths from 1,419 to 2,305 mm and heights from 1,473 to 2,372 mm.

The 100s ran for only two years before the 30 series (130 to 450) followed in 1956 – their rarity makes them sought after by collectors, their Torque Amplifier made them the turning point of IH transmission technology.

On used tractors, originality, engine condition and carburettor, the Torque Amplifier (clutch pack), Hydra-Touch hydraulics and sheet metal count; parts are readily available in North America and through specialists in Europe.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
