Hitachi log loaders ZX200 to ZX370F-6 – the forestry versions of the Zaxis excavators: ZX for Zaxis, the number as weight class, F for Forestry, -6 as generation, Live Heel and VIH as equipment
Hitachi's log loaders are Zaxis excavators converted for the log yard and the forest road: with raised, guarded cab, reinforced undercarriage, forestry boom and grapple with which the machine takes logs off the truck, sorts them and loads them onto wagons or road trains – the machine of North American sawmills and log yards, where Hitachi belongs with John Deere, Caterpillar and Link-Belt to the four suppliers. The type logic: ZX marks the Zaxis excavator range, the number the weight class of the base excavator in hundreds of kilograms – ZX200 about 20 t, ZX260 26 t, ZX310 31 t, ZX370 37 t, considerably heavier with forestry equipment – F the forestry version, -6 the generation of the 2010s, Live Heel the equipment with a movable log rest on the boom, VIH a further boom variant by factory logic. The engines are Isuzu diesels: the four-cylinder 4HK1 of 5.2 litres in the small, the six-cylinder 6HK1 of 7.8 litres in the big models, at 1,900 to 2,000 rpm.

The register lists 7 versions with 122.1 to 202 kW from engines of 5,191 to 7,800 cm³, operating weights from 27,630 to 42,825 kg, lengths from 9,833 to 15,520 mm and a width of 3,630 mm.
The Zaxis log loaders are sold in North America through Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas and, until 2022, through the partnership with John Deere, whose forestry excavators were based on the same base machines.
On used machines, operating hours, the condition of undercarriage, slew ring and boom (cracks at welds), grapple and rotator, hydraulic pumps and coolers, cab guarding and air conditioning count; parts run through Hitachi and Isuzu.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
