The machine is 3,700 mm high. The wheelbase measures 5,446.8 mm. Ground clearance is 524.3 mm. Top speed is 54.1 km/h. The tank holds 485.3 litres. The gearbox has 6 forward gears. There are also 1 reverse gears. The electrical system runs on 24 V. The engine fitted is the MercedesBenz OM501LA. Tyre size: 26,5R25 Radial Earthmover. The Hitachi Articulated Dump Truck series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 278.8 to 530.3 hp; the AH350D sits in the middle of that range with 427.9 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the AH300D below it with 278.8 hp and the AH500D above it with 530.3 hp. 357 Hitachi models across 24 series are on record.

Hitachi AH250D to AH500D – the articulated dump trucks with Mercedes engines: AH for Articulated Hauler, the number as payload class in tonnes, six- and eight-cylinder OM906LA to OM502LA, 198 to 382 kW

Hitachi took over the articulated dump truck business from Euclid in the 1990s and continued it as Euclid-Hitachi, later fully under its own name. The AH range stands for 'Articulated Hauler', the model number giving roughly the payload class in tonnes – from the AH250D at around 25 t to the AH500D at around 50 t payload; the D marks the diesel version. The models are powered by Mercedes-Benz diesel engines of the OM family: the six-cylinder OM906LA in the smaller, the V-engines OM501LA and OM502LA in the larger machines.

The register lists 5 versions with engines of 6,371 to 15,932 cm³, outputs of 197.6 to 381.8 kW and torque of 1,315 to 2,676 Nm, at a rated speed around 1,800 rpm. Lengths range from 9,504 to 10,820 mm, widths from 2,880 to 3,901 mm, heights from 3,430 to 7,230 mm, with the greater height including the raised body position when tipping.

Articulated dump trucks haul material in open-pit mining, earthmoving and on unmade sites over ground too soft or uneven for rigid dump trucks; the articulation between tractor unit and body allows tighter turning circles. In this segment Hitachi competes chiefly with Bell, Caterpillar, Volvo and Komatsu.

On used machines, operating hours, the condition of the articulation joint and oscillating axle, body bearing and tipping cylinders, tyres and brakes, and the Mercedes engine itself count, whose parts are usually readily available through the wide Mercedes commercial-vehicle network, while machine-specific parts run through Hitachi.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
