Henschel of Kassel built trucks alongside locomotives and heavy engineering from the early 20th century and was for decades among the established German commercial-vehicle makers. In 1969 Daimler-Benz acquired a majority stake in the company, and by the mid-1970s truck production had been fully absorbed into the Mercedes-Benz range, ending the Henschel marque. The HS100, HS140 and H261 types listed in this register stand for the marque's medium and heavy ranges from this late period.

Henschel trucks were among the established heavy commercial vehicles in West Germany during the 1950s and 1960s, competing with MAN, Magirus-Deutz and Krupp. With the Daimler-Benz takeover the independent marque disappeared, and many surviving examples are now part of vintage-vehicle collections.
