Lanz Bulldog HR 8 – the hot-bulb Bulldogs from Mannheim: D 9506 to D 9550 and D 1500/1506, the last digits as hp class, single-cylinder two-stroke with hot bulb, multi-fuel operation, 540 to 750 rpm, 22 to 40 kW

The Lanz Bulldog is the tractor that became a generic name in Germany: Heinrich Lanz of Mannheim built from 1921, to the design of Fritz Huber, tractors with a single horizontal cylinder working as a two-stroke hot-bulb engine – no carburettor, no spark plug, a bulb heated with a blowlamp before starting, and the ability to burn crude oil, heavy oil, tar oil, diesel and vegetable oil: multi-fuel, as the register notes. The HR 8 range denotes the Bulldog generation of the 1930s to 1950s; the type logic: D stands for the version with pneumatic tyres and gearbox, the four-digit number orders the size, the last two digits give the hp class – D 9506 about 25 hp in the post-war grading, D 9511 about 35 hp, D 9550 about 55 hp – the D 1500 and D 1506 are the small post-war Bulldogs. Rated speeds lie at 540 to 750 rpm – the Bulldog runs so slowly that you can count the firing strokes.

The register lists 8 versions with 22 to 40.3 kW from single-cylinders, unladen weights from 3,600 to 4,400 kg, lengths from 3,000 to 3,455 mm, widths from 1,780 to 1,865 mm and heights from 1,860 to 2,320 mm.

More than 200,000 Bulldogs were built up to the takeover of Lanz by John Deere in 1956; the hot-bulb layout ended in 1955 with the semi-diesel. The Bulldog is today Germany's most-collected tractor with its own club and rally culture.

On used tractors, originality, the condition of cylinder, piston and hot bulb, crankshaft and bearings, gearbox and clutch, the steering-wheel start (the steering wheel serves as the starting crank), sheet metal and wheels count; Bulldog specialists supply parts and reproductions.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
