Hatz TL series – the tractors of the engine maker from Ruhstorf (1950s–1960s): TL 10 to TL 38, the number as hp, one to three cylinders of its own manufacture
Hatz of Ruhstorf an der Rott in Lower Bavaria is known today as a maker of small diesel engines for construction machinery and generator sets – in the 1950s and 1960s the company also built tractors, like many post-war engine makers who wanted to sell their engines in a tractor of their own. The TL series is that programme: the number gives the output in hp – TL 10 with 10 hp, TL 12, TL 13, TL 15, TL 17, TL 18, TL 22, TL 24, TL 25, TL 28, TL 33 and TL 38 – and P marks a version variant. The engines came from in-house production: one-, two- and three-cylinder diesels with which Hatz covered the class from 10 to 38 hp, the small ones for part-time farms, the three-cylinders for the medium farm.

The register lists 15 versions with 7.4 to 27.9 kW (10 to 38 hp), 567 to 2,987 cm³ with one to three cylinders, rated speeds up to 1,800 rpm, unladen weights from 715 to 1,870 kg, lengths from 2,470 to 3,328 mm, widths from 1,440 to 1,600 mm and heights from 1,386 to 1,800 mm – all diesel.
Hatz ended tractor production in the 1960s when the volume makers took over the market and concentrated on engines – a decision that carries the company to this day; the TL tractors remained a regional phenomenon of Bavaria and Austria.
Used Hatz tractors are rare collector pieces; when buying, engine condition and parts availability count, possible for the engines partly through Hatz itself, for gearboxes and axles only through specialists and remanufacturers.
