With the H-220, Hatz offers a model from the H series. Production: 1962–1964. The engine delivers 20 hp (14.7 kW), has 2 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,463 cm³. Rated speed is 1,900 rpm. The machine is 3,230 mm long, 1,588 mm wide and 1,386 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,700 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,028 mm. Ground clearance is 320 mm. Top speed is 20 km/h. Transmission: 8 V/4 R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-16 ASF, rear 10-28 AS. The fuel is diesel. Construction: frameless unit construction. The gearbox offers 8 forward gears. There are also 4 reverse gears. Around 163 units were built. The H-Baureihe series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 13 to 40 hp; the H-220 sits in the lower part of that range with 20 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the H-113 below it with 13 hp and the H-222 above it with 22 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 845 to 1,910 kg; here the H-220 sits in the upper part of that range with 1,700 kg. 106 Hatz models across 4 series are on record.

Hatz H-113 to H-340 – the field tractors of the engine maker from Ruhstorf an der Rott: type number by maker logic as power class, one- to three-cylinder Hatz diesels, 9.6 to 29.4 kW, 845 to 1,910 kg

Motorenfabrik Hatz of Ruhstorf an der Rott in Lower Bavaria is known chiefly as a maker of air-cooled industrial diesel engines fitted in construction machinery, compressors and generators. In the post-war years, when numerous German engine builders offered their own field tractors alongside construction equipment, Hatz ran the H range as small to mid-size standard tractors, consistently fitted with Hatz's own diesel engines – from a single cylinder in the lightest to a three-cylinder in the largest models of this range.

The register lists 5 versions with engines of 668 to 2,987 cm³, 1 to 3 cylinders, outputs of 9.6 to 29.4 kW and rated speeds of 1,750 to 2,600 rpm. Service weights range from 845 to 1,910 kg, lengths from 2,492 to 3,340 mm, widths from 1,490 to 1,588 mm.

As the tractors of a maker specialised primarily in engines, the H range occupied a niche between the large tractor brands and the numerous small suppliers of the 1950s; production numbers stayed modest, while Hatz increasingly concentrated its core business on industrial engines, with which the brand remains internationally present today.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of injection pump and cooling-air ducting on the air-cooled engines, clutch and gearbox, rust on sheet-metal and chassis parts count; engine spares are generally accessible through Hatz as a still-active engine maker, while tractor-specific parts run only through vintage specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
