Gehl telehandlers DL, RS and CT – from West Bend, Wisconsin, Manitou since 2008: capacity in thousands of pounds and lift height in feet, DL7-44 to DL12-40, 43 to 86 kW

Gehl of West Bend, Wisconsin, founded in 1859 as a farm-machinery works, built telehandlers for American building construction and agriculture from the 1980s and has belonged since 2008 to the French Manitou group, which continues the brand alongside Mustang as its US arm. The type logic follows the American convention: DL stands for Dynalift, the classic range, RS for the later range, CT for the compact telehandlers; the first number gives the capacity in thousands of pounds, the second the lift height in feet – a DL7-44 lifts 7,000 lb to 44 ft, a DL12-40 12,000 lb to 40 ft, an RS5-19 5,000 lb to 19 ft, a CT5-16 5,000 lb to 16 ft. The older 6H, 6L and 8H are the forerunners of the 1980s, Turbo and Low Profile mark engine and height variants.

The register lists 21 versions with 43.3 to 85.8 kW from John Deere 4045T and Perkins 1103/1104 engines of 3,294 to 4,392 cm³, rated speeds of 1,400 to 2,750 rpm, service weights from 4,536 to 12,909 kg and heights from 1,930 to 2,600 mm.

Gehl's telehandlers are the machines of American masonry and drywall sites: lifting pallets onto scaffolds and floor slabs, side-shifting with the carriage – the tie-up with Manitou brought European hydraulics into the American design.

On used machines, operating hours, wear of the boom wear pads, play in boom and axles, the condition of the cylinders and parts supply, which runs through Manitou and Gehl dealers, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
