Freightliner FLD – the American long-nose highway tractor: BBC 112 to 132 inches, 10.8 to 15.1-litre six-cylinders, unladen weight up to 16.2 tonnes, gross weight up to 26 tonnes

Freightliner is the American truck brand that grew out of the haulage firm Consolidated Freightways in 1942 and has belonged to Daimler since 1981. The FLD series – known from 1991 under the Classic name – was Freightliner's classic long-nose tractor with an exposed bonnet, replacing the earlier FL series. The numbers 112, 120 and 132 after FLD give the bumper-to-back-of-cab length in inches (BBC), and so indirectly the size of the engine bay; XL and Classic XL mark the aerodynamically faired trim lines with a larger tank and radiator package.

The register lists here 10 versions with 10,800 to 15,125 cm³ displacement from six-cylinders, unladen weights from 7,390 to 16,230 kg, gross weights from 10,000 to 26,000 kg, lengths from 8,000 to 10,200 mm and widths from 2,450 to 2,590 mm.

The FLD Classic shaped the look of American long-haul trucking for a decade and a half and, until replaced by the Century and Columbia series, was Freightliner's most-built long-nose model; in Europe it remained an import for enthusiasts and show tractors.

On used examples, the condition of the six-cylinder diesel (Detroit Diesel, Cummins or Caterpillar depending on the order), frame rust, the clutch and manual gearbox, the cab's air suspension, and, on imported trucks, the availability of US-specific parts all count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
