Framo V901 – East German chassis with three-cylinder two-stroke engine: 900cc displacement, 660kg payload, 2,770mm wheelbase, 1,700mm width, model year 1954

Framo was a German manufacturer of small commercial vehicles based in Hainichen/Frankenberg in Saxony, building light vans and three-wheelers before and in the first years after the Second World War; production in East Germany was later continued under the name Barkas. The V901 chassis from 1954 dates from this period.

The three-cylinder engine has a displacement of 900cc, a two-stroke drivetrain typical of Framo in these production years. With a gross vehicle weight of 1,700kg and an unladen weight of 1,040kg, a payload of 660kg remains. A wheelbase of 2,770mm combined with a width of 1,700mm on four wheels gives a compact, light chassis.

A three-cylinder two-stroke engine of 900cc was, in the early 1950s, a typical, simple and light drivetrain solution for small German commercial vehicles. With a gross vehicle weight of 1,700kg, the vehicle sits well below the later EU limit of 3,500kg for category N1 and was designed for light distribution transport of that period.

When preserving or acquiring a Framo chassis of this age, the condition of the two-stroke engine, particularly the pistons and bearings, matters most, along with the originality of the carburettor and intake system. The frame and axles should also be checked for corrosion, and the availability of spare parts, which for this East German brand is now mainly limited to specialists in historic commercial vehicles.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
