Top speed is 22 km/h. Transmission: 12 V/4 R or 12 V/12 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-16 ASF (A: 7.00-16 AS), rear 13.6-24 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 84 mm. The stroke is 90 mm. The compression ratio is 19:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,500 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The 20 er-Baureihe series covers 8 models. Rated output within it ranges from 14.7 to 40 hp; the 1920 (A) sits in the upper part of that range with 32 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 1720 (A) below it with 26.5 hp and the 2120 (A) above it with 40 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 605 to 1,620 kg; here the 1920 (A) sits in the upper part of that range with 1,290 kg. 23 Ford/shibaura models across 3 series are on record.

Ford/Shibaura 20 series (from 1987) – the second compact-tractor generation from Matsumoto: 1120 to 2120, the first digits as size class, 20 as series, A for four-wheel drive

The 20 series replaced from 1987 the 100 series with which Ford had sourced compact tractors from Shibaura of Matsumoto in Japan since 1973 – the same partnership, one generation on, with new bonnet, synchromesh gearboxes and four-cylinders in the larger models. The type logic: the first digits order the size in ascending order – 1120 the smallest model, 1520 and 1720 the mid-range, 2120 the largest – 20 marks the series, A four-wheel drive, which became the rule in this generation. The engines are Shibaura diesels with three cylinders in the small and four in the big models, 0.9 to 2.3 litres at 2,500 to 2,600 rpm; the register span up to 29.4 kW and 1,620 kg shows that the 2120 already reached the class of full-size tractors.

The register lists 8 versions with 10.8 to 29.4 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 879 to 2,269 cm³, torque from 53 to 121 Nm, unladen weights from 605 to 1,620 kg, lengths from 2,700 to 3,485 mm, widths from 1,030 to 1,631 mm and heights from 1,345 to 2,265 mm.

The 20s continued under Ford and from the 1990s under New Holland and were then replaced by the TC and Boomer ranges; in North America they are the typical tractors of hobby farms and golf courses of their time.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition, gearbox and four-wheel-drive clutch, the condition of mower PTO and loader hydraulics, tyres (turf or agricultural tread) and parts supply through New Holland count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
