Ford/Shibaura 100 series (1970s and 1980s) – the Japanese compact tractors in Ford blue: 1000 to 1900, the number as size class, A for four-wheel drive, Shibaura two- and three-cylinders of 0.7 to 1.4 litres, 9 to 21 kW

The 100 series is the result of one of the earliest partnerships between a Western tractor group and a Japanese maker: from 1973 Ford had compact tractors for horticulture, municipalities and hobby farms built by Shibaura in Matsumoto and sold them in North America and Europe in Ford blue as Ford 1000 to 1900 – Shibaura, in tractor building since 1950, supplied design and engines, Ford sales and name. The type logic: the number orders the size in ascending order – 1000 and 1100 the smallest two-cylinders, 1200 to 1900 the three-cylinders – A marks four-wheel drive, in demand in this class for front loader and mowing on slopes. The engines are Shibaura's own small diesels of 0.7 to 1.4 litres at high rated speeds of 2,500 to 2,800 rpm.

The register lists 8 versions with 9.2 to 21.1 kW from two- and three-cylinders of 706 to 1,434 cm³, unladen weights from 560 to 1,220 kg, lengths from 2,410 to 3,010 mm, widths from 1,070 to 1,460 mm and heights from 1,380 to 2,190 mm.

The Ford–Shibaura partnership lasted through the 20 series into the New Holland era and lives on today: New Holland's compact tractors (Boomer) still come from Japan, and Shibaura has belonged to IHI since the 1990s.

On used tractors, operating hours, compression and injection of the Shibaura engine, clutch, gearbox and four-wheel-drive clutch on A models, PTO and hydraulics for mower and front loader count; parts run through New Holland and Shibaura specialists, wear parts are readily available.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
