Ford used the Ranger name for two different lineages: the compact pickup that replaced the Courier in North America in 1983 and, from 1998, the global model built initially in Thailand and sold across Europe, southern Africa and Asia, and, in the 1960s to 1980s, the Ranger trim package on the larger F-100/F-150/F-250, which explains the heavier eight-cylinder versions carried in the register. The current generation, built since 2011 in Thailand and South Africa, carries the XL, XLT, Wildtrak and Raptor designations for equipment and off-road specification.

As a double-cab pickup with around a tonne of payload, the Ranger covers the mid-size pickup segment and competes in Europe with the Volkswagen Amarok (a badge-engineered sister model since 2022), the Toyota Hilux and the Mitsubishi L200, and in North America additionally with the smaller Chevrolet Colorado; use ranges from trade vehicles to leisure and fleet duty.
When buying used, check frame corrosion behind the rear axle and at the leaf-spring mounts, on the turbodiesels (2.2/3.2 TDCi, 2.0 EcoBlue) the intercooler, DPF and injectors, on four-wheel-drive versions the transfer case and, on older manual-hub models, the locking hubs, plus wear on the load bed and tow hitch; parts run through Ford's global network, with older US models sometimes relying on importers.
