Ford Major – the large standard-tractor range from Dagenham that succeeded the Fordson: New, Power and Super Major, 40 to 47 kW, three- and four-cylinder engines of 3,290 to 3,819 cm³

At Ford's Dagenham plant near London, the Major continued the Fordson's standard-tractor line, whose first post-war model appeared in 1945 as the E1A Fordson Major. Through the 1950s and early 1960s came the New Major, Power Major and Super Major with rising output and improved hydraulics, until in 1964, as part of Ford's global tractor model policy, the range moved into the new number series starting with the Ford 5000. Engines grew from three- to four-cylinder diesels, while the early models were also offered in part as petrol and paraffin versions.

The register lists here 5 versions with 40 to 47 kW from three- to four-cylinders of 3,290 to 3,819 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 2,010 to 2,820 kg, a gross weight of 2,132.5 kg, lengths from 3,480 to 3,600 mm and widths from 1,760 to 2,400 mm.

For over two decades the Major was the bread-and-butter tractor of British and European arable farms and was also exported in large numbers; it competed directly with Massey Ferguson, International Harvester and the German manufacturers.

On a used Major, the condition of the cylinder head and cooling system, the clutch and gearbox, the tightness of the hydraulic pump for the three-point linkage, and rust on the chassis and wings all matter; thanks to the range's wide distribution, an active spares market for engine and wear parts continues.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
