The NASTRO D'ORO series from Fiat Trattori includes the 400 V/E. Production: 1968–1971. The engine delivers 34 hp (25 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 2,340 cm³. Torque is 140 Nm. Rated speed is 2,200 rpm. The machine is 3,230 mm long, 980 mm wide and 1,770 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,610 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,885 mm. Ground clearance is 340 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. Transmission: 6 V/2 R or 9 V/3 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-15 ASF (E: 6.00-16 ASF), rear 9-28 AS (E: 11-28 AS). The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 95 mm. The stroke is 110 mm. The compression ratio is 17:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,400 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The NASTRO D'ORO-Baureihe series covers 40 models. Rated output within it ranges from 25 to 150 hp; the 400 V/E sits at the bottom of that range with 34 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 350 V below it with 33 hp and the 400 (DT) above it with 35 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,220 to 5,650 kg; here the 400 V/E sits at the bottom of that range with 1,610 kg. 99 Fiat Trattori models across 9 series are on record.

Fiat Nastro d'Oro – the 'Golden Ribbon' of 1968: Fiat's standard tractors from the 250 to the 1300

Nastro d'Oro, 'Golden Ribbon', was the name under which Fiat Trattori marketed its completely renewed tractor programme from 1968. The range replaced the boxy post-war models and introduced a uniform design with the characteristic grille, together with Fiat's own engines with two to six cylinders. For years it was Italy's best-selling tractor and, through licences and exports, spread across Europe and beyond.

The type number follows engine output in coarse steps: the 250 marks the lower end, the 1000 and 1300 the top. Suffixes denote versions – DT stands for Doppia Trazione, i.e. four-wheel drive, V for the narrow vineyard version, Super for the revised successors of the late 1970s, Spezial and E for differing equipment. In the register the models run from 18.4 to 110.3 kW, from 1,559 to 7,412 cm³ of displacement and from 1,220 to 5,650 kg unladen; top speed for all lies between 20 and 30 km/h.

Production of the individual models stretches from 1968 into the 1980s; the late Super types formed the transition to the next generation, with which Fiat eventually merged into Fiatagri and later New Holland.

Used Nastro d'Oro tractors are robust, simply built machines with good parts supply, above all in southern Europe. Check the gearbox and clutch on four-wheel-drive versions and the condition of the cabs, which on many examples were retrofitted.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
