The Fendt 516 Vario Gen3 belongs to the 500 Vario Gen3 series. Production: 2015–2021. The engine delivers 163 hp (120 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,038 cm³. Torque is 687 Nm. Rated speed is 2,100 rpm. The machine is 4,465 mm long, 2,510 mm wide and 2,965 mm high. The unladen weight is 6,400 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,560 mm. Top speed is 50 km/h. The tank holds 298 litres. Transmission: Vario ML90. The gross vehicle weight is 10,500 kg. The gearbox offers 1 gears. The linkage is category II/III. The PTO runs at 540 / 540E / 1000 / 1000E rpm. The 500 Vario Gen3 series covers 4 models and was built 2015–2021. Rated output within it ranges from 124 to 163 hp; the 516 Vario sits at the top of that range with 163 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 514 Vario below it with 150 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 6,050 to 6,400 kg; here the 516 Vario sits at the top of that range with 6,400 kg. 1545 Fendt models across 89 series are on record.

Fendt 500 Vario Gen3 — and why "Vario" is more than a name: a four-cylinder with 81 to 120 kW (124 to 163 hp), stepless transmission, FendtONE cab, model years 2015 to 2021

At Fendt the Vario suffix means the stepless transmission — and a decision that changed tractor engineering. In 1995 Fendt presented the Favorit 926 Vario, the world's first large tractor with continuously variable drive. The idea reaches back further: it arose in the 1950s in the "Projekt System Allgaier", taken up by Fendt engineer Hans Marschall.

A single case became a principle. With the introduction of the 200 Vario around 2009, Fendt converted its entire tractor production to the stepless concept — from roughly 70 to over 500 hp. Anyone looking for a Fendt today is therefore almost always looking at a Vario.

The third generation of the 500 series carries the FendtONE operating system. Four tractors make it up, powered by a four-cylinder of 124 to 163 hp rated output and 131 to 171 hp maximum, coupled to the stepless Vario transmission.

When buying used, the generation marker therefore matters more than the model number. Between a first- and a third-generation 500 Vario lie the operating concept, engine technology and emissions stage — the same figure in the name, different machines. Gen3 is not an addendum but the actual information.

The AdBlue note in the fuel field points to SCR exhaust treatment, which reduces nitrogen oxides in the exhaust using the AdBlue additive from a separate tank and was what first made compliance with EU emissions stages IV and V possible. Modern tractors in this power class also typically have a three-speed PTO with 540, 1,000 and the fuel-saving 1,000E, with the three-point hitch matching category II under ISO 730.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
