Eicher of Bavaria began building tractors in the 1930s and for decades named its models after big cats and predators – Tiger, Königstiger, Panther, Puma, Leopard and Mammut mark different power classes of the German ranges. Later in the 20th century the German tractor division passed to other owners, while the Eicher name lives on in India as an independent tractor brand, where models such as the 242 Super Star, 242 XTRAC and Goodearth 242 are built for the domestic market. The type numbers of the German ranges roughly order the power class, EM and ED mark equipment variants; the engines come from Eicher itself, from Deutz and from Simpson, a long-established Indian engine maker.
