The ELVIRA from Robin Radar Systems (Netherlands) was the manufacturer’s first 2D FMCW radar for drone detection in the X-band. The manufacturer has replaced it with the IRIS, and the device counts as discontinued. It could be used stationary or vehicle-mounted, for airports, military use and critical infrastructure.
The detection range is 2.7 km against a DJI Inspire (3 kg) and 2.2 km against a DJI Phantom (1 kg): range falls with the size of the drone. The instrumented range of 5 km is the radar’s own reach, not a figure for drones. 2D means the radar delivers range and bearing but not the height of a target. It monitors 360 degrees and weighs 72 kg, so it belongs on a mast or vehicle, not in the hand.
Radars transmit too: in Germany every use of a frequency needs an assignment from the Bundesnetzagentur (Section 91(1) TKG), and that applies to an older unit in service as much as to a new one. How frequency use is regulated in Poland has to be clarified with the competent authorities before deployment. The radar detects and tracks; jammers may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).
Anyone running or taking over an ELVIRA should first clarify the scope of support, spare parts and firmware with the manufacturer, since the line has been replaced. A 2D radar cannot separate targets in height; a bird and a drone on the same bearing stay hard for the device to tell apart, and cameras help here. On used units, check the antenna bearings and drive, seals, connectors and power supply. The ranges hold only for drones of the sizes named.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
