The RIEGL miniVUX-4UAV is a new, light UAV laser scanner from Austria for mid-sized multicopters. It offers a selectable pulse rate from 100 to 400 kHz, a field of view up to 360° and 5 echoes per shot, optionally with IMU and GNSS.
The range is 330 m at 80 % reflectivity, 290 m at 60 % and 170 m at 20 % (for 100 to 200 kHz and 300 to 400 kHz). In the reduced 360° mode the values drop to 280, 250 and 150 m. The measurement rate is up to 200,000 per second; at 400 kHz and a 120° field of view it is up to 133,333 per second. Accuracy is 12 mm, precision 8 mm. Up to 5 echoes per pulse capture ground and vegetation at once. The unit weighs 1,550 g. IMU and GNSS are optional as RiLOC-E25 or RiLOC-F.
The manufacturer marks the datasheet as preliminary; before purchase the final version must be compared. The scanner is a laser device, and the laser class given by the manufacturer (standard IEC 60825-1) is to be observed. The weight of 1.55 kg counts towards the take-off mass of the aircraft, which thereby lies in EU class C2 (below 4 kg) or above it up to C3 and C4 (25 kg). Point clouds of built-up areas fall under data-protection law.
Measurement rate and range depend on field of view and pulse rate: at 400 kHz and 120° the rate falls to up to 133,333 per second, and in the reduced 360° mode the range is shorter. This must be taken into account when planning flying height. Georeferencing needs IMU and GNSS, that is, the option or a positioning system of your own. Wear points are the scanner window, the connectors and the deflection mechanics; after knocks the calibration is checked.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
