The ModalAI Flight Core v2 (USA) is a PX4 flight controller based on an STM32H7, made in the USA, for mid-size multicopters. ModalAI lists it among its end-of-life products; as replacement the manufacturer names the VOXL 2 and the VOXL 2 Mini.

The STM32H7 belongs to the processor class that is the standard in modern Pixhawk autopilots and runs the flight control. PX4 is the intended firmware. The Flight Core is designed as a pure flight controller: camera and AI processing belong on a separate computer, whereas only the VOXL 2 combines flight controller and mission computer in one device.

According to the manufacturer's documentation the Flight Core v2 meets the requirements of Section 848 of the 2020 NDAA which counts for contracts with US federal authorities. In the EU the finished drone determines the class; Remote ID and geo-awareness apply to classes C1 to C3 and to C5 and C6.

Anyone maintaining an existing platform with the Flight Core v2 checks the PX4 version and the availability of spares and cable sets; for new designs the manufacturer points to the VOXL 2 family. Wear sits at the connectors and the mounting; after every modification the IMU, compass and radio link are set up again and parameters are saved.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
