The maxon UAV-ESC 52/30 CAN (654538) is a single-motor ESC from the Swiss drive maker maxon for professional UAVs of the mid class. It controls one motor sensorlessly with field-oriented control (FOC), is commanded over DroneCAN v1 and reports speed, voltage, current and temperature as telemetry.
The continuous current of 30 A applies without airflow at 20 °C, i.e. under strict conditions: it needs no wind of the kind that is missing in a hover. The peak current of 90 A may flow for up to 25 s, a comparatively long time basis. The input window runs from 9 to 52.2 V and covers 3S to 12S; 12S is 50.4 V fully charged. Weight comes in three states: 18 g for the bare board, 66 g with lead but without housing, 102 g with housing. Sensorless FOC estimates the rotor position from the motor's electrical quantities and needs no Hall sensors; it runs sinusoidally, quietly and efficiently.
Frame and law: on 12S an ampere-hour of battery brings 44.4 Wh, and from about 2.3 Ah a pack passes the IATA limit of 100 Wh. Professional missions often run in the specific category, where the operational authorisation looks at the whole system; Remote ID and operator registration concern the aircraft, not the ESC.
For selection the bus system counts: DroneCAN needs a flight controller with a CAN port, unique node identifiers and a terminated line. Telemetry eases maintenance because temperature and current are visible in operation. Check connectors, capacitors and solder joints after vibration and heat; the housing protects the board, whereas the bare variant needs its own protective measures.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
