The Livox Mid-70 is a 905 nm LiDAR from China with a circular field of view and near-zero minimum range, meant for mid-sized multicopters. The design suits obstacle detection and mapping when the target lies close in front of the sensor.

The field of view is circular at 70.4°. The Mid-70 reaches 260 m at 80 % reflectivity and 90 m at 10 % reflectivity. The point rate is 100,000 per second with one echo and 200,000 with two; two echoes per pulse capture ground and vegetation at once. The accuracy figure of 2 cm is a precision. The unit weighs 580 g. The minimum range is near zero, meaning the sensor also measures targets directly in front of the window.

The scanner contains a laser, and the laser class given by the manufacturer is to be observed. At 580 g, it stays below the 900 g limit of EU class C1; the classes depend on the total take-off mass of the aircraft, though. Images of people and property fall under data-protection law, and the operator must be registered.

The field of view of 70.4° sets the swath width: the higher the flight, the wider the swath, but the thinner the point density. For georeferenced maps, scanners of this design need an external IMU and a GNSS. Points to check are the window, which must stay clean, the cable and the rigidity of the mount, because vibration degrades the point cloud.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
