The Livox Mid-360 is a compact 360° LiDAR at 905 nm from China for mid-sized multicopters and for robots. It is used for SLAM, simultaneous mapping and position determination, mainly at close range on small drones.

The Mid-360 reaches 70 m at 80 % reflectivity and 40 m at 10 % reflectivity, each in sunlight of 100 klx. It delivers 200,000 points per second. The field of view is 360° horizontally and 59° vertically (from −7° to +52°), so the device sees almost the whole surroundings. The accuracy figure of 2 cm is a range precision (1 sigma at 10 m), not a system accuracy. An ICM40609 IMU is built in, a GNSS is not. The unit weighs 265 g.

The scanner contains a laser, and the laser class given by the manufacturer is to be observed. At 265 g, it stays below the 900 g limit of EU class C1; the EU classes depend on the total take-off mass of the aircraft, though. Images of people and property fall under data-protection law, and the operator must be registered.

The 70 m range makes the Mid-360 a close-range sensor: it suits obstacle detection, interiors, forest under the canopy and SLAM, not mapping from great height. For georeferenced maps in the field, it needs an external GNSS. Wear points are the window, which gets dirty, and the cable; the mount should damp vibration so that the IMU delivers clean data.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
