The SPEXER 600 from HENSOLDT (Germany) is a light, crew-portable radar with a GaN AESA antenna in the X-band and a built-in tracker. It is primarily a ground surveillance radar and also picks up low-altitude air targets, where small drones also fly. It can be run portable or vehicle-mounted; the manufacturer names military use as its field of use.

The radar works in the X-band at 9 to 9.6 GHz. The sector is ±60 degrees in azimuth, meaning 120 degrees, at 40 degrees of elevation. All-round cover therefore takes several units or turning the unit. Ground surveillance radars are designed first of all for people and vehicles on the ground; for drones, what counts is low flight close to the ground, where small drones operate. The X-band allows compact antennas, which makes the radar portable.

Radars transmit too: in Germany every use of a frequency needs an assignment from the Bundesnetzagentur (Section 91(1) TKG). How frequency use is regulated in Poland has to be clarified with the competent authorities before deployment. The radar detects and tracks; jammers may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).

In selection, separate whether ground or air surveillance comes first: the design aims at ground targets, with drones as an addition. The detection range for one’s own drone class has to be requested from the manufacturer with its radar-cross-section reference. In portable use, batteries, tripod and setup time count; with vehicle mounting, north alignment and tilt calibration. With no rotating antenna there is no drive wear; connectors, mount and firmware remain checkpoints.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
