The Harrier 50-42 Drone Parachute Bundle from Fruity Chutes (USA) combines a spring-powered Harrier launcher with an Iris Ultralight canopy to form a recovery system for light multicopters. It is meant for aircraft with a nominal weight of 2.5 kg and a maximum of 5 kg. It is released through a servo channel, for example with the Sentinel trigger, the Skycat Rescue Radio or a remote control.

The sink rate of 4.6 m/s is the design value at 2.5 kg, not at the maximum of 5 kg; with a higher load the aircraft descends faster and hits harder. The launcher measures 50 x 133 mm and the bundle weighs 183 g. On an aircraft with a nominal weight of 2.5 kg that counts towards take-off weight. How high the aircraft must fly at minimum for the canopy to open fully is decisive for the flight plan and is found in the manufacturer's documents.

For flights over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category, evidence to ASTM F3322 or EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512 may be required. Anyone flying like that must be able to produce it for the combination of aircraft, launcher and canopy; ready-made kits for a given aircraft model are easier here than a self-made adaptation. Between 2.5 and 5 kg the aircraft is close to the 4 kg limit of EU class C2.

Wear points are the spring of the launcher and the servo that releases the canopy: function test with servo and receiver before each block of flights. After a deployment, canopy and lines are checked for tears and chafing, and the launcher is made ready again as the manufacturer's documents specify. The servo channel of the aircraft has to carry the release signal reliably.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
