The EchoShield from Echodyne (USA) is a software-defined mid-range radar for drone defence and airspace surveillance. It uses a metamaterial antenna (MESA) in the Ku-band, weighs 17.8 kg and can be used stationary or vehicle-mounted. The manufacturer names military use, critical infrastructure and airports as fields of use.

The field of view is 130 × 90 degrees according to the datasheet. The detection range of 3 km is a lower bound: according to trade press, small drones are typically detected from about 3 km, large ones at more than 12 km. The measurement range of 30 km depends on the mission and is not a figure for drones. The Ku-band (15.4 to 16.6 GHz) allows compact antennas but is attenuated more by rain than the X-band. The pulse-Doppler radar is software-defined, so beam shape and search pattern can be adjusted in software.

Radars transmit too: in Germany every use of a frequency needs an assignment from the Bundesnetzagentur (Section 91(1) TKG), also for a Ku-band radar. How frequency use is regulated in Poland has to be clarified with the competent authorities before deployment. The radar detects and tracks; jammers may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).

In selection: 3 km is the lower bound for small drones, not the normal case for large ones. A unit with 130 degrees of azimuth covers only one sector, and all-round protection takes several units. Being software-defined makes configuration and firmware version a maintenance item; with no rotating antenna there is no drive wear, and with vehicle mounting the mount, connectors and tilt calibration need checking. Cameras and RF detectors complement the radar for classification.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
