The Dronetag Mini 4G is an attachable Remote ID module for mid-size multicopters that combines two paths: direct broadcast and network-based transmission over 4G. It works on its own with its own battery and GNSS receiver, measures 57.5 x 35 x 16 mm and weighs 36 g. Cloud tracking runs on a subscription, while Bluetooth remote identification needs none.

Battery life is up to 10 hours depending on configuration. The manufacturer quotes a Bluetooth range of about 3 km; it depends on the receiving device, antenna and surroundings. The standards named are ASD-STAN EN 4709-002 for the EU, the UK and Singapore and ASTM F3411-19 for the USA; the approvals are FAA, EASA, CAA and CAAS. At 36 g the device is a noticeable add-on that counts towards take-off weight on small drones.

In the EU remote identification requires direct broadcast to ASD-STAN EN 4709-002 and an EU declaration of conformity; network tracking over 4G is an extra function and does not replace the broadcast. The duty applies to drones of classes C1, C2, C3, C5 and C6 and, in the specific category, since 01.01.2024. The module has to accept the operator registration number.

When choosing, ask whether network tracking is really needed: it requires mobile coverage at the site and a subscription that pure broadcast does not. The battery ages with cycles and deep discharge, and run time drops in the cold. Check charge level and registration number before each use, and keep the antenna clear of carbon fibre.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
