DroneShield RfPatrol Mk2

Series: DroneShield RF detectors for drone detection

The RfPatrol Mk2 from DroneShield (Australia) is a passive RF drone detector worn on the body, which can also be held in the hand. It warns visually, by vibration and by sound, and does not transmit itself. The housing is protected to IP67 against dust and temporary immersion. The manufacturer names military use, police and events as fields of use.

The detection range is up to 4.0 km in rural terrain and up to 1 km in a city (trade press, military datasheet). The difference is typical of passive detectors: in a city, buildings and many other signals shorten reception, while in open country the line of sight is clear. The detector covers 360 degrees and weighs 0.8 kg without antennas and battery; the battery weighs 0.38 kg, so together that is over 1.1 kg, with the antennas on top.

The detector does not transmit and does not interfere with the drone’s radio link. Whether and how receiving and evaluating third-party radio signals is permitted (secrecy of telecommunications, data protection) has to be clarified for Germany and Poland before use; that applies to police and event security as well. Jammers may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).

In selection, wearing comfort and the type of warning count: vibration works in noise, visual alerts in darkness. The battery sets operating time, and cycle count, cell condition and behaviour in cold are checkpoints; antennas and connectors are heavily stressed on the body. The signature library needs upkeep so that new drone types are recognised. An all-round warning shows only that someone is transmitting within range; drones that do not transmit stay invisible.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
