The Auterion Skynode X is an integrated unit of flight controller, mission computer and LTE module for mid-size multicopters. It runs PX4 and the manufacturer's own AuterionOS and is meant as the core building block for drones that are connected over the mobile network.

The flight controller follows the FMUv6X standard with a Cortex-M7 at 480 MHz and 2 MB flash; the mission computer is integrated in the unit. The LTE module provides the data link to the ground station and cloud services, the Pixhawk Payload Bus connects payloads, and further connections lead to speed controllers, GPS and cameras. According to the manufacturer the Skynode X is 30% thinner and 15% lighter than its predecessor.

Auterion declares the unit NDAA compliant, which US federal contracts may require. In the EU the finished drone decides on class and Remote ID; flights beyond visual line of sight over LTE belong in the specific category, not in the open category.

As a manufacturer-bound system the Skynode X offers ready integration but less freedom in payload and ground station. When selecting, mass and input voltage have to be taken from the data sheet before the weight budget is set. Mobile coverage in the operating area, SIM management and antenna routing need planning. AuterionOS, PX4 and the LTE module are updated together through the manufacturer; payload bus connectors and antenna ports are the points to check under vibration.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
