The RAM series from Dodge includes the RAM 3500 Quad Cab. Production: 1998. The engine delivers 173 kW, has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 5,900 cm³. The vehicle is 6,190 mm long and 2,400 mm wide. The unladen weight is 3,430 kg. The gross vehicle weight is 4,990 kg. The gearbox offers 5 gears. The RAM series covers 273 models. Rated output within it ranges from 109.4 to 523 kW; the RAM 3500 Quad Cab sits in the lower part of that range with 173 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the RAM VAN below it with 171 kW and the RAM 2500 LT-KF23D-4X4/352 above it with 175 kW. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,114 to 5,060 kg; here the RAM 3500 Quad Cab sits in the middle of that range with 3,430 kg. 1343 Dodge models across 29 series are on record.

RAM 1500, 2500, 3500 — the number is a payload in pounds: Stellantis' American pick-up range with HEMI V8 and Cummins six-cylinder diesel engines

The figures 1500, 2500 and 3500 are not model names but a legacy of measurement: they originally denoted payload in American pounds. The principle has held — the higher the number, the greater the payload. In kilograms, a 1500 carries around 700 kg, a 2500 about 1,200 kg and a 3500 roughly 1,700 kg.

The difference is not only on paper, though. Axles, transmissions and frame are consistently stronger on the 2500 and 3500 than on the 1500. That explains why the 1500 is regarded as a comfortable everyday vehicle and the heavy models as working tools — they share a name, not a substance.

The engines divide the range too. The 6.7-litre Cummins six-cylinder turbodiesel is available only in the 2500 and 3500; it was never offered in the 1500, nor was the 6.4-litre HEMI. The HEMI name denotes no series but a combustion chamber shape: hemispherical, a design feature of Chrysler V8s for decades.

Anyone assessing a vehicle should therefore read model year and engine together. For the 2025 model year the HEMI V8 in the regular 1500 range was replaced by Hurricane-family inline sixes of up to 540 hp — the same type number, a fundamentally different machine.

Ram models registered in Europe, with gross vehicle weights from 3,499 to 8,846 kg, span from the boundary of class N1 into class N2 (3.5 to 12 t); above 3.5 t, commercial use requires a category C1 driving licence, a tachograph and compliance with driving and rest times, plus a toll in several countries. Unlike the heavy Class 8 tractor units of the same model family in the US, the Ram remains, technically, a rigid vehicle with a fixed bed, not a tractor unit.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
