Deutz-Fahr DX 4 series – 1980s compact class from Cologne and Lauingen: type number by power class and development stage, air-cooled four-cylinders, 51.5 to 65.9 kW, A four-wheel-drive version
The DX series was Deutz-Fahr's mid-size range, the company formed in 1968 from the merger of the Cologne engine maker Deutz with the Baden-based farm machinery maker Fahr of Gottmadingen and Lauingen an der Donau. In the 1980s Deutz-Fahr ordered its tractors by power class: the first digit after DX names the class, the digits after the point (here 10, 30, 50, 70) the development stage within that class in ascending power, while the A suffix marks the four-wheel-drive version. All four models are driven by air-cooled Deutz diesel engines that need no coolant or radiator.

The register lists here four versions with 51.5 to 65.9 kW (70 to 75 hp) from four-cylinder engines of 3,768 to 4,086 cm3 displacement. Unladen weight ranges from 3,660 to 4,170 kg, overall length from 4,040 to 4,170 mm, width sits around 2,300 mm, and height between 2,610 and 2,640 mm. Torque ranges from 237 to 320 Nm at a rated speed of 2,300 rpm.
The DX 4 series targeted mid-sized mixed farms looking for a versatile yard tractor for fieldwork, transport and front-loader work, competing with comparable four-cylinder tractors from Fendt Farmer and Massey Ferguson of the period.
On a used purchase the air-cooled engines deserve particular attention: cooling fins, the fan and the fan belt must be free of dirt and cracks, since a failure of the air cooling quickly leads to engine damage. Also worth checking are the clutch, the gearbox synchro rings, the tightness of the hydraulics and lift linkage, and rust on the stub axles and frame. Wear parts for the Deutz engines are still available through the SDF/Deutz-Fahr parts network.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
