Rated output across the David Brown range ranges from 12.2 to 108 hp; the 995 sits in the middle of that range with 62 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 990 SELECTMATIC below it with 58 hp and the 996 (A) above it with 64 hp. Unladen weight across the David Brown range ranges from 991 to 4,345 kg; here the 995 sits in the middle of that range with 2,610 kg. 147 David Brown models across 19 series are on record.

David Brown 995 (1971-1976) from Meltham, Yorkshire: water-cooled four-cylinder diesel of 3,194 cc, 58 hp or 64 hp to DIN standard, 45.6 kW at 2,125 rpm, Selectamatic hydraulics, 2,610 kg

David Brown was a British tractor manufacturer based in Meltham, near Huddersfield in Yorkshire. The 995 was built from 1971 to 1976 and belonged to the maker's Selectamatic generation, named after the shared control panel for hydraulics and PTO, which let both systems be operated independently of the driving clutch.

The water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine has a displacement of 3,194 cc. The manufacturer's rating is 58 hp, measured to the DIN standard it is 64 hp, both at 2,125 rpm, equal to 45.6 kW and 217 Nm of torque. The 995 is 3,302 mm long, 1,702 mm wide and 2,515 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,083 mm and a weight of 2,610 kg. Its top speed is 25 km/h.

The Selectamatic control brought hydraulic valves and PTO clutch together on one panel and allowed a so-called live PTO, independent of the driving clutch, which kept turning even when the tractor was stationary. At almost 46 kW and over 2.6 tonnes, the 995 was built for heavier draft and PTO work on medium to larger farms.

When buying a used example, check the condition of the Selectamatic valve block and the PTO clutch, since worn seals here lead to a loss of hydraulic performance. Equally important are the radiator and water pump, clutch and gearbox, the condition of the steering knuckles given the vehicle's weight, and rust on sheet metal. Spare parts are supplied by specialist dealers in classic David Brown tractors.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
