It was succeeded by the Daihatsu Terios. The ROCKY series covers 31 models. Rated output within it ranges from 67 to 75 kW; the ROCKY sits at the bottom of that range with 67 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the 3D ROCKY EX TURBO-4X4/253 above it with 75 kW. Daihatsu Rocky – the compact off-roader with hardtop, softtop and pickup bodies, four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, 67 to 75 kW, 2.0 to 2.8 litres displacement, gross weights up to 2.8 tonnes

The Daihatsu Rocky is a compact off-roader that Daihatsu offered from 1984 on the platform of its sister model Feroza as a hardtop, softtop, wagon and pickup, aimed chiefly at simple, rugged off-road use through its ladder-frame construction and selectable four-wheel drive. The body variants in the register – hardtop, softtop, wagon and pickup, each also available as a diesel or turbodiesel version – show the range of a model used both as an open recreational off-roader and as a closed work vehicle for agriculture and forestry.

The register lists 31 versions with 67 to 75 kW from the four-cylinder engine of 1,998 to 2,800 cm³. Unladen weights range from 1,300 to 1,840 kg, gross vehicle weights from 1,780 to 2,805 kg, lengths from 3,820 to 4,160 mm and widths from 1,580 to 1,820 mm.

The Rocky competed in the compact off-roader segment with the Suzuki Vitara and the Lada Niva, finding buyers chiefly among farmers and foresters as well as through export to markets where simple mechanicals and low running costs mattered more than comfort.

When buying used, what counts is corrosion on the frame, wings and door sills, the condition of the transfer case and driveshafts of the four-wheel-drive system, the turbocharger on turbodiesel variants, and on the open softtop versions the condition of the folding-roof frame and cover. Spare parts are only available to a limited extent outside Japan and mostly run through specialist off-road vehicle dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
