DAF AVW – the trailer range from the early days of Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek: light to medium trailers from 5.5 to 20 tonnes gross weight
DAF originally stood for Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek: the Eindhoven welding workshop of brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne turned into a trailer builder in 1932 and became known for light, welded chassis with high payloads, before the company also entered truck manufacturing in 1949 and became today's DAF truck brand. The AVW range – the letters stand for aanhangwagen, Dutch for trailer – orders its models by a two-part number: AVW 3-6, AVW 4-8, AVW 6-12 or AVW 8-16 rise with increasing weight, while suffixes such as /1NL, /2NL or S mark individual versions and axle configurations.
