DAF AVW – the trailer range from the early days of Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek: light to medium trailers from 5.5 to 20 tonnes gross weight

DAF originally stood for Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek: the Eindhoven welding workshop of brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne turned into a trailer builder in 1932 and became known for light, welded chassis with high payloads, before the company also entered truck manufacturing in 1949 and became today's DAF truck brand. The AVW range – the letters stand for aanhangwagen, Dutch for trailer – orders its models by a two-part number: AVW 3-6, AVW 4-8, AVW 6-12 or AVW 8-16 rise with increasing weight, while suffixes such as /1NL, /2NL or S mark individual versions and axle configurations.

The register lists 23 versions of the DAF AVW with kerb weights from 2,590 to 14,570 kg and gross vehicle weights from 5,500 to 20,000 kg. Lengths range from 7,900 to 12,150 mm, widths from 2,180 to 2,600 mm.

As an early trailer range from today's truck manufacturer, the AVW documents the origin of the DAF brand in trailer and semi-trailer building, before the company focused on complete trucks and left trailer building to other manufacturers.

On these older trailers, the frame and drawbar deserve particular attention for corrosion and cracking, along with the condition of axles, brakes and lighting, and a proper upgrade of the braking system to current regulations; original spare parts are no longer available from DAF itself but only through specialised vintage and trailer workshops.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
