DAF AS – the Dutch long-haul tractor of the 1990s: 75, 85 and 95 series, XF cab, 9.2 to 12.6-litre six-cylinders, gross weight up to 28 tonnes

DAF is the Dutch truck maker from Eindhoven, part of the US PACCAR group since 1996, which also owns Kenworth and Peterbilt. The model numbers 75, 85 and 95 come from DAF's 1990s series, in which a rising digit marked a higher gross-weight class; XF denotes the newly introduced flagship cab for long-haul transport from 1997, while WC, XC and PC were earlier cab variants of the 85 series.

The register lists here 10 versions with 9,187 to 12,580 cm³ displacement from six-cylinders throughout, unladen weights from 9,828 to 20,090 kg, gross weights from 22,300 to 28,000 kg, lengths from 8,300 to 11,350 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,600 mm.

The 75, 85 and 95 series were the backbone of DAF's heavy long-haul transport in the 1990s, before being replaced by the CF and XF generations, and with their robust inline-six engines formed the basis for both tractor units and heavy flatbeds and special bodies; DAF ranked among the leading brands of European long-haul transport during this period.

On used examples, the condition of the DAF inline-six and its injection, frame rust, the ZF gearbox, the cab's air suspension, and the kingpin at the heaviest versions all count, along with brakes and the clutch on intensively used tractor units, plus the mounting of the rear-axle suspension; parts run through the DAF dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
