Citroën HY – front-wheel-drive van with corrugated bodywork: panel van, flatbed and special conversions such as Heuliez, built 1947 to 1981, four- to eight-cylinder engines from 1,770 to 3,528 cc

The Citroën HY is the front-wheel-drive van with corrugated bodywork that Citroën introduced in 1947 as the successor to the pre-war TUB and built almost unchanged until 1981. The bodywork of pressed, ribbed panels saved on expensive tooling, while the mechanicals — front-wheel drive, independent wheel suspension and hydraulically assisted brakes — came from the Traction Avant. The register's type suffixes such as IN2, Fourgon, Camionette, Plateau and Électrique denote panel van, open flatbed, chassis with load platform and the electric version; Heuliez refers to special conversions by the French coachbuilder of the same name.

The register lists 18 versions with 33 kW from four- to eight-cylinder engines of 1,770 to 3,528 cc, unladen weights of 1,300 to 2,470 kg, gross vehicle weights of 2,480 to 3,200 kg and widths of 1,900 to 2,060 mm.

For decades the HY shaped the streetscape of French trades businesses, bakeries and the postal service; its distinctive shape later made it a popular basis for conversions into mobile shops and food trucks, and its simple, easy-to-maintain mechanicals turned it into a favourite of the classic-car scene far beyond France.

When buying used, check for rust on the corrugated panels, the sills and the floor pan, the condition of the hydraulic braking system and the bevel-gear drives, and the tightness of the riveted body joints; suspension and brake parts are supplied by the active classic-car and food-truck scene, while body panels are often reproductions.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
