Caterpillar D4C — one model designation, used twice
At 59 to 60 kW, 7.3 to 7.9 tonnes and 5.0 to 5.2 litres of displacement, the D4C sits one class above the D3C in Caterpillar's line-up. The D4C designation was used twice at Caterpillar: an earlier D4C, per Caterpillar's version overview, ran 1959 to 1963, then replaced by the D4D, D4E and D4H. The models on record in this database, however, belong to a later, technically separate D4C line: Series II ran from 1990, Series III from 1993 — sold alongside the large D4H/D5 line as a more compact offering within the C-programme.
Like the smaller D3C, the D4C mainly sees use in compact earthworks and site-clearing jobs where the large standard dozers would be too big or too heavy for the ground.
For a used Hystat variant, check the hydrostatic drive unit closely, since it's more prone to costly repairs than the simpler steering clutches on the standard versions; otherwise the same wear points apply as on the D3C — track links, rollers, final drives.
In short: a D4C found in this database is the compact C-series unit from the 1990s, not the like-named model from the 1960s.
