Case Magnum – large tractors from Racine: six-cylinders from 230 to 320 kW, CVX stepless transmission, the flagship of the Case range

Case has built the Magnum series since 1987 at the Racine plant in Wisconsin as the top class of its field tractors; production continues today under the Case IH brand, formed in 1985 when J.I. Case merged with International Harvester's agricultural division. The CVX suffix marks models with a stepless transmission (Continuously Variable Transmission), while PRO denotes a later, electronically upgraded specification level. All Magnum models use six-cylinder diesel engines for work with heavy implements and in arable farming.

The register lists here 6 versions with 230 to 320 kW from six-cylinders of 8,709 to 8,880 cm³, unladen weights of 10,770 to 13,430 kg at gross vehicle weights of 14,000 to 18,000 kg, lengths of 5,760 to 6,575 mm and widths of 2,460 to 2,550 mm.

The Magnum series is among the most powerful standard tractors on the arable farming market and competes there with John Deere's 8000 series and Fendt's large Vario tractors; with its CVX transmission and high drawbar pull it is in demand particularly among large arable farms and contractors.

When buying these large tractors used, what counts is operating hours, the condition of the front axle suspension, the tightness of the hydraulics and, on CVX models, the service history of the stepless transmission; spare parts run through the dense Case IH dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
