In 1985 Case's parent company Tenneco took over International Harvester's agricultural division and initially ran both ranges under the Case International badge, before it became Case IH. During this transition many ranges from the former International Harvester programme – among them the 55, 85 and 95 series and the large eight-cylinder tractors – continued under the new Case International name before they were gradually replaced by Case's own Maxxum and Magnum ranges. Model designations such as 5140, 844S or 956AXL still stem from this IH nomenclature.

The register lists here 21 versions with 92 to 107 kW from six-cylinders of 5,880 to 6,580 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 5,870 to 6,110 kg, gross weights from 8,300 to 9,580 kg, lengths from 4,850 to 4,880 mm and widths from 2,360 to 2,400 mm.
These transitional models served larger arable farms in North America and Europe and formed the backbone of many operations during the phase when the new Case IH product line-up was still taking shape; they competed with John Deere, Ford and Massey Ferguson in the same power segment.
On used Case International tractors, the condition of the six-cylinder engine and injection pump, the clutch and power-shift transmission, hydraulic lines, and rust on the chassis and cab frame all matter; spare parts for the IH engines and transmissions remain available through CNH and specialist parts dealers.
