Berkhof – other models: the collective page for coaches outside the named series, from the Ambassador to the Premier, 6,800 to 10,950 cc, six cylinders

Berkhof, of Valkenswaard in the Netherlands, was a bodybuilder that for decades produced coach and bus bodies on chassis from other manufacturers, before the company was absorbed into the VDL group in 2002 as VDL Berkhof. This page gathers versions outside the named series: the Ambassador, Axial and Premier model families, classic names for Berkhof's coach bodies. Unlike conventional truck makers, Berkhof typically supplied only the body, while the chassis and drivetrain came from suppliers such as DAF, Volvo or Scania.

The register lists five versions with 6,800 to 10,950 cc of displacement, a constant six cylinders, kerb weights from 9,019 to 11,720 kg and gross vehicle weights from 14,440 to 18,600 kg; lengths range from 10,520 to 12,000 mm at a width of 2,480 to 2,520 mm.

Berkhof's coaches competed in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries with bodybuilders such as Van Hool and Bova, and were used mainly by coach operators for international long-distance travel. The takeover by VDL secured the brand's technical access to modern chassis platforms.

For a used purchase, the key checks on these bodies are moisture damage to the roof and luggage-compartment floor, the condition of the air conditioning, and rust at the mounting points to the chassis. Parts for body panels are often only available through specialist coach workshops, while mechanical components match those of the respective chassis manufacturer.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
