Zetor was founded in 1946 in Brno, Czechoslovakia, and remains one of the few independent tractor makers in Europe not tied to one of the large agricultural groups. Early types such as the 3011/1920 combine the internal model number with engine power in hp, while the newer Proxima and Forterra ranges carry a four-digit number whose first two digits give the power class, as with the Forterra 140 at about 140 hp.

When buying used, on the older models the clutch, brakes and hydraulic pump matter, on the Proxima and Forterra additionally the electronics and cab seals; rust on mudguards and floor panels is common on the classics. Zetor parts are well available through the dealer network and independent farm-parts suppliers.
