The Bedford CF is a light commercial van produced by Bedford Vehicles, a subsidiary of General Motors Europe. It was built from 1969 to 1988 and succeeded the Bedford CA. Classified as a Light commercial vehicle, it was designed for the transport of goods and passengers.

The CF is equipped with a Slant‑Four engine available in sizes from 1.6 l to 2.3 l and features a 3‑speed automatic transmission. Overall length ranges from 4 260 mm to 4 813 mm, width is 2 000 mm and height is 1 980 mm. These dimensions give a compact footprint suitable for city traffic and narrow delivery routes, while the low van body makes efficient use of cargo space. The 3‑speed automatic gearbox provides straightforward operation and smooth power delivery, easing driver workload during frequent stop‑and‑go conditions.

The Bedford CF is typically employed where a sturdy yet compact transport vehicle is required. Its size and moderate power output make it well suited for urban deliveries, tradespeople moving materials, and agricultural operations that need to move smaller loads between farm and market.

The Bedford CF is a van with a longitudinally mounted front engine and rear-wheel drive. It was powered by a four-cylinder in-line engine from the range known as the 'Slant Four', available with manual or automatic transmission. Height is 1,980 mm and width 2,000 mm. The combination of a front engine and rear-wheel drive was widespread among British vans of this size in the 1970s and 1980s.

As a classic front-engined, rear-wheel-drive van, the Bedford CF served British delivery fleets and was also a popular base for motorhome conversions, notably by the body builder Dormobile, which built its own campers on the CF chassis. Its nearly two-decade production run shows how widespread this chassis was in British trade.

When buying a used Bedford CF, check the condition of the four-cylinder in-line engine and its carburettor or injection system depending on the model year, corrosion on the wheel arches, sills and floor pan, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, and, for motorhome conversions, damp in the body. The steering components and front wheel bearings, which take particular strain on a front-engined van of this design, are also worth checking.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
